ethical design

Good50x70_posters

the main goal of the Good 50x70 poster competition was to use the skills of designers and advertising agencies to highlight seven issues that affect people around the world. the best posters, selected by a jury, were then gathered for an exhibition in Milan. the 30 winning posters for each of the 7 categories—child mortality, global warming, human rights violation, hunting, stds, war victims and water scarcity—will also be donated to various charities for use in future advertising campaigns.

to find out more about the project or view the gallery of winning posters, visit the Good 50x70 web site.

The Art of the Novella

Theartofthenovella_sml

The new series, The Art of the Novella, by Melville House Publishing is quite striking in its minimalist book format design. At $9 a piece, it's tempting to pick up the entire collection.

Beautiful Losers

Beautifullosers
Hooray! Just confirmed—Beautiful Losers will be coming to Chicago in September! Screenings will be shown at the Gene Siskel Film Center, September 19-26.

Synopsis:

Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind  one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation.

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.

gas prices bleeding your wallet dry?

Madeinqueens
gas prices bleeding your wallet dry? then perhaps it's time to dig out that ole bmx bike. who knows, maybe if enough people soup-up their bikes with enormous stereo systems like the ones found in the documentary film Made In Queens we can form our very own stereobike crew—the windy city way, of course.
